Welcome to the Ultrasound-Guided Vascular Access for Medical Practitioners programme. We are pleased to have you join this comprehensive training designed to develop your knowledge, clinical reasoning, and practical competence in vascular access procedures.

This programme has been carefully developed to guide you through the principles and skills required to perform vascular access safely and effectively, including the use of ultrasound to improve accuracy and patient outcomes.

Programme Overview

This is a 2-week self-paced online learning programme, followed by a 1-day face-to-face practical workshop.

  • Duration: 2 Weeks (Self-paced online learning)
  • Study Time: ±1–2 hours per day
  • Platform: Moodle
  • Requirement: All online learning must be completed before attending the practical day

You will be expected to work through each learning unit in sequence and successfully complete all required activities before progressing to the next Learning Unit. Mark each task as Done to progress.

Learning Structure & Roadmap

Your learning journey is structured into progressive units to build both theoretical understanding and clinical application:

Foundations – Ethics & Infection Control

You will begin with essential principles that underpin safe clinical practice, including:

  • Ethical practice, patient rights, confidentiality, and informed consent
  • Infection prevention, chain of infection, and PPE usage

These concepts form the foundation for safe and professional vascular access practice.

Anatomy, Vascular Access & Ultrasound

The second week focuses on clinical knowledge and procedural understanding:

  • Anatomy of blood vessels and appropriate access sites
  • Vascular access techniques, equipment, and complication management
  • Fundamentals of ultrasound and sonography-assisted vascular access

You will also engage with videos, podcasts, and guided learning material to reinforce your understanding.

Practical Day (Face-to-Face)

After completing all online components, you will attend a hands-on skills workshop, which includes:

  • Ultrasound machine setup
  • Vessel identification
  • Ultrasound-guided cannulation
  • Simulated practice with facilitator feedback
  • Competency assessment

Outcome: You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate competency in ultrasound-guided vascular access.

Assessments & Requirements

  • Each learning unit includes quizzes, readings, and activities that must be completed and passed to progress.
  • final online knowledge assessment will be available after the practical session.
  • You will have:
    • 2 hours to complete the final assessment
    • 1 attempt
    • Minimum 80% required to pass

Welcome to the Anatomy & Physiology module. 

It is hoped that this module will equip you with the necessary knowledge of the 12 body systems, pathology related to those systems, relevant medical terminology and  laboratory tests. As a Phlebotomy Technician, you should master this module to optimally service your clients.

The course is designed to prepare you for a successful transition into the healthcare work environment, with the focus on your role as the phlebotomist. It introduces the key aspects of workplace culture, safety, organizational hierarchy and the company values.

There are four learning units:
  1. Orientation- Covers workplace expectations, professional conduct, and adapting to the healthcare environment.
  2. Duties of a Phlebotomist- Explores the key responsibilities, scope of practice, and the importance of accuracy and patient interaction in blood collection.
  3. Informed consent- Introduces the legal and ethical foundations of obtaining consent, ensuring patient autonomy and compliance with healthcare regulations.
  4. The medical treatment cycle- Provides an overview of the patient care process, cycle of the sample, from initial consultation to diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.

This course is equipped to give you both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to strengthen your understanding and to contribute to better quality patient care with regards to HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment and testing. 🤝

How to Navigate the course🔍

The manual is divided into learning units.

Complete them for the best learning experience at your own pace.

PowerPoint slides: Click the play button to watch. Take notes as you progress. Recommended videos to watch are embedded into the PowerPoint slides.

Activities: Look out for activity prompts included in the PowerPoint slides—these may include case studies, matching exercises, or short reflections.

Quizzes: Complete the quiz to check your understanding at the end of each day.

Quizzes are timed and you have 3 attempts to move onto the next activity.

Progress Tracking: Your dashboard will show which learning units you’ve completed and what’s next.

Tips for success:

Please follow all instructions from PowerPoint slides, you will not be able to progress onto the next activity until the previous activity is completed.

Set aside time each day to stay on track.

Do not skip the quizzes, they help to enforce knowledge.

On day three, there will be a practical assessment done onsite, where you will be required to conduct an actual counselling session which is a pre-test and a post-test session.

I have included notes for the counselling sessions which you may refer to and use as guidelines to ensure everything is covered with your client.
